Blue Grass Airport
4000 Terminal Drive, Lexington, Kentucky, USAFacts and History about Blue Grass Airport
Blue Grass Airport, also known by its airport code of LEX, is a public airport located in Fayette County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is 9 kilometers (6 miles) west of the center of Lexington.
This Airport serves central and eastern Kentucky, and acts as a driver of economic expansion in the surrounding area, contributing to the Lexington area and other regions of Kentucky. Blue Grass Airport provides direct flights to 14 locations and handy connections to places all over the globe that are popular for business and pleasure travel. It also provides corporate and general aviation services and commercial passenger services.
These services include a recently constructed public aviation terminal, customs clearance by the United States government, charter flights, aircraft maintenance, hangars, and flight instruction.
The Blue Grass Airport was originally a municipal airfield constructed in 1933 with assistance from the Federal Civil Works Administration. This was done as part of a program to build airports across the state.
During World War II, pilots in training at Bowman utilized it as a dead-stick landing practice area to prepare for glider attacks.
In June of 1780, the General Assembly of Virginia established Fayette County by dissolving Kentucky County and dividing it into three new counties: Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln. Kentucky County had previously been one county.
In 1792, these counties split off to form what would ultimately be known as the Commonwealth of Kentucky and declared their independence from Virginia.
Originally, Fayette County included terrain now divided among 37 different counties and portions of 7 other counties. In 1799, its borders were redrawn to their current configuration.
The name of the county honors Marquis de Lafayette, who traveled to the new world during the American Revolutionary War to provide his assistance to the rebellious English colonies.
On January 1, 1974, the government of Fayette County amalgamated with the government of its county seat, Lexington, to become the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. This resulted in creating a consolidated city-county now controlled by a single entity.
